Original liner notes for the Ace Of Spades reissue boxset, 2020.
Running through the names I enjoyed the closest relationships with during the Zigzag years it’s hard not to mention Motorhead, one of the greatest uncut rock ‘n’ roll bands it’s ever been my pleasure to cavort with. Zigzag was an early champion of the classic lineup of Lemmy, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor that was derided by the music press but loved by a growing army of fans, including punk rockers. My five years with the trio included writing my first book about them, which got shelved after Fast Eddie departed in ‘82 but got assimilated into Make My Day, my recently published biography of Fast Eddie Clarke. There may be a lot of Motorhead rearing in my Substack archive (including that original book with biro corrections by Lemmy). Meanwhile, here’s the original draft of the liner notes scrawled in 2020 for the hugely expanded reissue of Ace of Spades, their biggest album.
